As any rider knows, bike shops are the hub of the bicycling community. They are the hub of the PeopleForBikes community too. We have more than 1,000 retailer members spreading the word about PeopleForBikes, bringing new riders into the movement and collecting donations to help fund our Community Grants program.
Each month we showcase one of our retailer members who is going above and beyond to help improve bicycling in their own communities. Last month we chatted with Chris Arterburn from Elevation Cyclesin Boulder, CO. This month, we chatted with Craig Kundig from Cyclery USA in CA on how he integrated PeopleForBikes into all of his stores and what he has in store for in 2014.
Tell us about Cyclery USA (size, specialty, employees, location, etc.)
Currently, Cyclery USA has three locations all across Southern California. One in Redlands, one in Riverside and our third (also our newest) is in Rancho Cucamonga. Between the three, we have more than 25,000 sq. ft. of shop space and more than 35 employees! Our oldest store dates back to 1968 with the Rancho Cucamonga store opening in 2009.
Our main bike lines are Trek, Specialized and Electra. Trek and Specialized’s support of advocacy is important to us; It plays into why we support them. We also carry some Mirraco and Fit while also recently selling Santana at our Riverside location. The three stores are full spectrum: road, mountain, fitness, commuter, kids and BMX.
What has been the reaction of your customers and employees to PeopleForBikes?
Our employees understand the need to mention the movement and we get little resistance from people coming through the door. We put the PeopleForBikes logo on our shop jerseys, which are for sale in our stores. This year, joining PeopleForBikes was one of five basic requirements to get a discount as a member of our cycling team. I believe a lot of bicyclists are completely in the dark about the issues and challenges that surround bicycling so the more information we can share, the better!
What are some unique ways that Cyclery USA has reached out to new PeopleForBikes supporters?
We do everything we can; sign ups at the counter and we try to keep the promotional stuff in stock, though, to be honest, we go through it all quickly! The display encourages questions from anyone who walks through our doors. We have sent two emails to our mailing lists to encourage people to join the movement. We have spoken about this at some of our local bike club meetings. To be completely honest though, we need to do more!
How do you keep your employees excited about PeopleForBikes?
It's trickled down. John Burke always gets us pumped up at Trek World so we come back fired up. The same thing happen at Independent Bike Dealer Summit in Monterey. When we spoke with the PeopleForBikes staffer there, it made us think about what we can do better. I noticed a dealer nearby doing something to collect more names and it motivated my staff and I to try even harder!
Do you have any big plans for your three stores in 2014?
We plan to attend many events this year with tech support and demos. We even bought a new vehicle for it! We’re are always looking to grow our community activism and this year won’t be an exception. Beyond that, we’re looking to have another stellar year between all three stores!

Current retailers: We’re running a contest now through the end of August for name collection. Every shop that collects a signature gets entered into a contest to win a $200 party on us! But that’s not all! Our trip to the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, CA in April inspired us to do something that no one has ever done before. We’re also giving the winning shop a sea otter! That’s not a typo, there’s a sea otter involved. While we can’t give away a live one (we’re pretty sure it’s illegal), the winning shop will also receive a symbolically adopted otter from the World Wildlife Foundation. Make sure to include your shop’s name and location of the bottom right hand corner of every page of signatures in order to get credit!
